ReviewsSome time ago I started to get into programming computers. There are books that teach programming languages. There are others that simply tell you what the commands are. They don't teach you how to program, but you can use the information to make your programs work. In a sense, programming books don't teach programming. In a similar way, Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs doesn't teach you how to do spells (although it does give a brief outline so you can use this without any other book). What it does do is give you all the information you need to make your spells, talismans, amulets, and rituals work better. This book has become a classic in its field. Every time I visit an occult shop that sells herbs, I look to see what books they use as resources. Inevitably, this book is there, usually quite beaten up from constant use. The pros use it and so do over 200,000 people like you. The cross-referenced index of folk names could be a book by itself. Did you know that if a magical spell calls for "bats' wings" you should use holly? Or did you know that if a magical recipe called for "lapstones" you should use potato? If you had this book you would know all that and more. You'd also learn that ragweed can be used for courage; lily of the valley can enhance mental powers and happiness; and chrysanthemums can be used for protection. This book by Scott Cunningham is truly encyclopedic. It gives information on over 400 herbs in an easy-to-use format that makes working with the book clear and simple. If you do any sort of magic with herbs, or if you are interested in folklore, this is a book you must have.

Handy Reference of Magical Herbs
This book covers some 400 herbs on their magical and ritual uses, along with information on folk names, various associations (to dieties, elements, planets), toxicity info, and primary powers. I find the occasional mention of historical uses and folklores associated with certain herbs to be particularly of interest. Most of the herb entries have botanical illustrations/drawings in black and white for identification - although illustrations of this type can be stylized and a little difficult to use for the purpose, they certainly add to the charm and visual appeal of the book. As a longtime gardener and a green witch, I enjoyed reading it cover to cover. But when I'm creating sachets and charms, I find the quick reference section at the end of the book, where the author indexed all the herbs by magical power and purpose, to be particularly helpful. In short, the book is exactly what the title says. Just to be clear, readers will not find information on medicinal use of these herbs in this book, as it is outside the scope, and there are many publications old and new on the topic. This is a reference of magical uses/properties of herbs. No Matter Who You Are
Knowledge of plants and herbs is helpful to everyone. Cunningham was one of the best writers to get this knowledge from and everything he wrote and drew still rings true. A 20th Century Classic
This book was recommended to me before purchasing. It's become a classic for magical correspondences of herbs. It's very extensive, as far as numerous listings. Each listing is very abbreviated, though, so it's more like a dictionary than an encyclopedia. Regardless, it's a handy volume that can easily be supplemented with online research. Because it's had a lot of support over the decades since it was published, there is a lot of agreement to the correspondences and magical purposes listed.
