  • Nice mobo with no quirks apart from RAM

I bought this motheboard because it's a simpler version of my other motherboard, an ASUS P2B-LS - which has onboard LAN and SCSI connectors. On my earlier version of the P2B-LS I don't have the jumpers to disable the LAN or SCSI functions and, since I don't use SCSI then this was a pain. There is a P2B-L that has only the LAN feature, but it's quite rare. My P2B-LS allows me to install 1GB or SDRAM and so, after checking with the manual, I also thought I could do that with the P2B-F, but it didn't work and the maximum I get is 512MB. So the P2B-LS has an undocumented feature that works and the P2B-F has a documented feature that doesn't! Huh! A downside to not having onboard LAN is that you need to use an ISA/PCI slot, which is a pity if you're hoping to have lots of cards installed (like me). I'm not into gaming really, so my goal is to build a vintage PC for it's own sake and not to get the best possible performance for playing Doom or Quake. I'm pretty happy with any ASUS P2B motherboard (if you're a gamer, consider the dual-Pentium P2B-D), ATI 3D Rage Pro 8MB, SB 16 WavEffects (CT4170) with SoftMPU, Adaptec AUA-3020 for three extra USB 2.0 and 2 Firewire ports. If you're building your own PC then the EverCase ECE4292B is amazing value for money at just £40. You can easily set up Windows 98SE to use USB if it's not supported in your CD distribution and using USB sticks is by far the easiest way of copying over data between computers. Take care when choosing an ATAPI CD-ROM; you may be tempted to buy an ATAPI DVD-ROM instead but some of these can't read CD-R discs (hard to believe but true) so do take the trouble to find out first.
