  • Interesting Radio Shows of The Shadow, but inferior sound and CD quality, and overall poor restoration..........

A boxed set with interesting possibly less than well known episodes of the Shadow. However, there is one big problem. This boxed set of The Shadow is put out poorly restored by Radio Spirits, which I have read works in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institute which would give one the idea they would be of better quality.. They are in the regular CD speed, not the inferior MP3 CD's, but the sound quality is still poor and many of the CD's skip badly. The CD's produce better sound quality than was previously available on audio cassette, but still fall FAR SHORT in good restoration work for CD's. The sound and tonal quality is often muffled, and there are parts that you can hear well, and other parts are difficult to hear, especially if the sound in any section which happens to be low. Also oddly, the voice of Margo Laine is so muffled at times, you can hardly make out what she is saying. I even had trouble with the CD's in this set even playing without skipping on my CD player. However, as I have several players, did eventually find one that would play the CD's, although still with the muffled sound and overall poor quality. I noted the CD's themselves seemed to be of a lesser quality, with the edges lacking a smoothness, and a larger size CD (thickness) which is typical of lower priced and poor quality CD's available on the Market. RADIO ARCHIVES out of Spokane, Washington puts out the best restoration work of these older Radio Shows, but I don't think they have restored any from The Shadow series. Maybe they have been unable to get the original transcription discs of The Shadow, as they do offer a good variety of programs as it seems the Smithsonian Institute just may have the market on them. Hopefully one day they will be able to offer good quality CD's of The Shadow, but for now I am afraid Radio Spirits out of New Jersey is the only source, inferior though they may be at least some work has been done on The Shadow programs, but that restoration work was minimal if this set is any example of their work. I had the same problem with other sets of The Missing Episodes also put out by Radio Spirits. Plus, the CD's come stacked on top of each other, and are not in individual plastic sleeves, so they are much more subject to scratching. The box was even made cheaper! If you like The Shadow, then get this set, but try and get it at a very low price, as that is all it is worth considering how inferior the sound, tonal and restoration work is on their CD's. Hopefully one day the RADIO ARCHIVE group will eventually be able to release their restored versions of The Shadow Radio Programs, as I am sure if they are restored as their other programs are, they will be immensely better that what is offered on this set.
