Might be Tom Clancy's best...!
My favorite Clancy book, and I've read most of them. Unlike the others, this one isn't about Jack Ryan...it's the story of how the very-dangerous John Clark came to be working for the CIA. Actually, he's former Navy SEAL John Kelly, an amiable and reclusive guy with a deadly skill set, living on an isolated island on Chesapeake Bay. In the story, he takes in a drug-addicted girl, Pam, who's running from a ruthless drug ring that had enslaved her and several other girls for sex and building of their illegal drug enterprise. Having just gotten clean with Kelly's help, Pam is murdered in the most horrible manner by her former captors. Using all of his combat training and considerable covert skills, Kelly begins a systematic vigilante-style campaign of revenge against the drug ring. Investigating this series of murders, police detective Ryan (he's actually the father of 17-year old Jack Ryan) begins to suspect Kelly. In the meantime, Kelly is approached by the military to undertake a dangerous mission in North Vietnam to rescue high-level POWs who have been listed as dead. After successfully completing the mission, Kelly returns to settle unfinished business with the leaders of the drug ring...Kelly comes out on top in a final shootout, but the police are now certain he's the vigilante behind all the killings in the drug world. Detective Ryan enlists the aid of the Coast Guard to chase Kelly's boat with the intent of arresting him, but as a result of an unexpected turn of events Kelly "disappears" (with a little help from his friends) and is presumed drowned, only to emerge as "John Clark", now in the service of the CIA.
*** For me, this book was a gripping and satisfying read. ***
