Jackie Willow, a soldier who wants to go to Vietnam, is assigned instead to the D.C. Old Guard, the main function of which is to provide the pomp and ceremony for army burials. There, his military nature aligns him to Sgt Clell Hazard and Sgt Goody Nelson. Both Jackie and Clell try to get transferred to the action, but their efforts are blocked by Capt. Thomas, who likes his division just as it is. Finally, Jackie is accepted at OCS and he marries his longtime sweetheart Rachel. Jackie makes Lieutenant and is shipped out to Vietnam where he's killed just before his tour is up. Having all but adopted Jackie, Clell is enraged at the injustice. He decides to resign, but after a talk with his own true love Sam, decides to go to Vietnam instead to train soldiers in survival techniques. He hopes his expertise will save a few.
