Bass unit, not subwoofer
Unless you have heard many other speakers, your reference point would only be these speakers. Polk, Klipsch, Boston Acoustics, Paradigm, PSB and many others would out do these units for the same or lower price. A Subwoofer is a unit that can reproduce 30hz and below. This unit hovers around 45hz at its lowest end. This is a bass unit. Also of note, it's range is up to 200hz, very directional and audible, meaning I can tell where the subwoofer is located. For full price, I could get an awesome Paradigm or PSB or even Magnepan.....and these are award winning companies that put out great products. Notice that Bose products do not have THX certifications, one of the most stringent in the industry, nor is it mentioned in any Audiophile magazines (plural). That sums it up, so if you bought and happy with it, great for you, you could have done better. Nice system without overpowering bass
