For the Ghibli completionist only! Not a family movie!
OK. This is a Studio Ghibli film. That is almost the ONLY thing that this film has going for it. Yes, the artwork was beautiful and the animation smooth and fluid. Yes, it tells a story albeit a very feminine one at that. I personally couldn't sit through the last hour and I had no problems sitting through any other Ghibli film! Only Yesterday Blue Ray
I love this animation but it’s remastering in Blue Ray has improved audio and wonderful graphic resolution as if it was only created only yesterday. For full effect I watch with Japanese audio and English translation. The original vocal casting and actors emotional portrayal of the animated characters bring such life to this move. The "Lost Classic" of Takahata finally sees a US release
This was the film that Takahata did right after his fantastic Grave of the Fireflies. As good as grave of the fireflies is, it's not a movie I can watch very often due to its overwhelmingly tragic story. Thankfully, Only Yesterday has a much lighter tone. This is a delightful film that is at times funny, at times a bit sad, but it left me with a tear in my eye and a smile on my face at the end. It is a moving expression of the human condition. It's about remembering childhood for all its wonder and innocence, wanting to in some ways relive those times, but needing to let go and move on. This Blu ray release has good image quality and excellent sound, though it would seem that no attempt has been made at even a 5.1 surround sound mix.
