SynopsisThe urban classic coming-of-age story about sex, drugs, and basketball Jim Carroll grew up to become a renowned poet and punk rocker. But in this memoir of the mid-1960s, set during his coming-of-age from 12 to 15, he was a rebellious teenager making a place and a name for himself on the unforgiving streets of New York City. During these years, he chronicled his experiences, and the result is a diary of unparalleled candor that conveys his alternately hilarious and terrifying teenage existence. Here is Carroll prowling New York City--playing basketball, hustling, stealing, getting high, getting hooked, and searching for something pure. The Basketball Diaries was the basis for the film of the same name starring Leonardo DiCaprio. "I met him in 1970, and already he was pretty much universally recognized as the best poet of his generation. . . . The work was sophisticated and elegant. He had beauty." -- Patti Smith

  • No laughing matter

This is an autobiographical journal of an urban urchin lost in the world of drug addiction. Author Jim Carroll takes his readers on a down-and-dirty and down-right frightening roller coaster ride. You'll be amazed by the honesty with which this book is written. If you are a serious reader who takes interest in the lives of other people, read this book.

  • Timely with the rapid addiction problem

I recommend you watch Jim Carroll in a few youtube interviews before reading the book. Also there was a film made, and opposite the usual idea that the book is better than the film, the book is not better. The film was what got me interested in the book. So, watch him first as an introduction to the book and you'll appreciate and understand his "style" a little better. It was a quick read, one afternoon by the fire. It's an amazing glimpse into a heroin addicts thought process and life style. Even thought it was decades ago, it still gives you some idea of how they process life.
