Infuriating. I love it.
Y'know how there are games like Dark Souls and Super Meat Boy, which are specifically DESIGNED to make you angry? Well this is one of those types of games, but it clearly wasn't developer intended. One slip up could cost you a race, and it's absolutely crazy. Track layouts are well designed and memorable, and the controls are near perfect, with only the slightest control lag every once in a while. The CG cutscenes are absolutely beautiful, even matching Pixar quality (except Tails's model), and the in-engine cutscenes are cartoony and silly, which is just how I like my Sonic. There are bits where it takes itself too seriously (apparently, bird people can't fly because their ancestors angered the gods?), but overall, the game takes on a fun mood, even having Amy chase Sonic around with a hammer at one point in good old Tom & Jerry fashion. Not to mention, there's tons of content, and the game's intense difficulty will give you hours of fun. Or pure, unfiltered rage. Probably rage. The strange thing is, this feels like it was going to be an arcade game at one point. Take out the story mode and quicktime events, make your air gauge a time limit, and make the control scheme one of those snowboarding type machines, and you have an arcade hit. There's even a tutorial movie at the title screen that plays if you don't touch anything. A quirky little game that's great for any masochist's GameCube collection, I give this game 5 poorly voiced bird people out of 7.
