Product Information

In 1974, young Patty Hearst became a media icon after she was kidnapped from her apartment by a group calling itself the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA). At the time, Patty was an impressionable college student who happened to be the granddaughter of the infamous William Randolph Hearst. The SLA's demands on Hearst's family were unique; hoping to spark a class war in America, they instructed the Hearsts to make a multimillion dollar donation of food to the poor. But the story firmly imprinted itself in the history books when, two months after the initial abduction, Patty appeared to have joined forces with the SLA, and was caught on camera wielding a gun as the team robbed a bank. This documentary on Hearst's story offers some fascinating insights on what happened to her during her time with the SLA. Some startling footage has been unearthed, and some former members of the SLA come forward to give their accounts of the story. Hearst has subsequently enjoyed a post-kidnapping career as an actress, and has appeared in a number of films by the infamous "Pope of Trash" John Waters, whose 2000 film CECIL B. DEMENTED owes a sizable debt to Hearst's kidnapping tale.

  • Could've been better film on Patty Hearst

I was hoping this documentary about Patty Hearst and the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) would be an interesting documentary since Americans were glued to their TV sets back in the 1970's waiting to hear another captive recording piece from Hearst and the SLA. I was left feeling sort of uninterested and I think it's because of Robert Stone's handling of the material of the Hearst kidnapping. We get archival footage and talking heads but the film lacks due to a boring narrative. Maybe Stone was trying to target Millennials into seeing this documentary but I have a feeling Millennials wouldn't care or knows who Patty Hearst was...Even the infamous bank robbery is uninteresting with Hearst seen wearing a fake wig while holding a machine gun but the sadness came to me with the devastating deaths of Marcus Foster and Myrna Opsahl who were killed by the SLA. As for Hearst? I don't really care if she was brainwashed or not by the SLA (that's what most of the doc mainly focuses on. Was Hearst really brainwashed by the SLA or did she accept to join the terrorist's group by her own free will? You be the judge) I'm just pleased Hearst was able to live on with her life and since she is now living in her later years in the 21st Century, I'm sure Hearst just wants to put this infamous event in American history behind her. Can't say I blame her.
