As tough-talking and street-smart as he is sensitive and well-read, Spenser (Robert Urich) is a Boston-based private eye whose penchant for poetry is as developed as his physique. Based on Robert B. Parker's book series, which carries on the tradition of hardboiled masters like Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett, ABCs popular TV show SPENSER FOR HIRE ran from 1985-88. After its cancellation, four feature-length films were released which featured the same cast as the show. Unlike the series, however, these were based directly on four of Parker's books, CEREMONY, PALE KINGS AND PRINCES, THE JUDAS GOAT, and A SAVAGE PLACE, with Parker himself co-writing the first two. Replete with the one-liners that secured the books' popularity, Spenser trades witticisms with his imposing sidekick Hawk (a pitch-perfect Avery Brooks, STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE) and on-off girlfriend, Susan Silverman (Wendy Crewson, THE SANTA CLAUS).

I like Robert Urichs acting style.
Natural actor the original Renaissance man as described by critics at the time.

4 FILMS TO MISS
I regret buying these 4 films. I watched the TV series many years ago and liked them. The films seemed more hard boiled cruel etc. The dialogue was minimal and as the actors mumbled away from camera, dialogue was missed as was the plot. A lot of male testosterone and posturing took place being vaguely silly. I laughed out loud at the silly hand to hand fight at the end of film 2 when the baddy walked away without being arrested. I found myself watching the clock waiting for the 4 films to end.

My brother is hard to buy for but he's going to LOVE these!
I bought these for my brother's birthday and it hasn't come yet -- we have read all the Robert B. Parker "Spenser" books. He's going to love the DVD's! So glad you had them.

The packaging looks great. I have not watched them yet but if the packaging is any indication I feel confident they will play fine.
