The classic comic strip and cartoon hero comes to life in Robert Altman's film adaptation of the adventures of the spinach-munching sailor. After he's thrown from his ship during a storm, Popeye (Robin Williams) finds refuge in a quaint seaside town. There he rents a room from the Oyls and meets their daughter Olive (the perfectly cast Shelley Duvall). Olive is engaged to Captain Bluto (Paul Smith), a bully and ruffian who is in charge of collecting taxes for the mysterious Commandant. Popeye, who was orphaned at an early age, is in the midst of a desperate search for his missing father, but what he doesn't realize is that the shipwreck has brought him unexpectedly close to his final destination. In bringing his own distinct vision to E. C. SegarÆs legendary hero, Altman creates an atmosphere that is breezy, loose, and filled with slapstick shenanigans. Williams portrays Popeye with a physically comic flair that is both honest and energetic--as do the rest of the cast members, including frequent Altman contributors Duvall, Paul Dooley, and David Arkin. Harry NilssonÆs songs add to the lighthearted affair, making POPEYE an enjoyable family viewing experience all around.

Memories great to watch
We had to buy this as we a tour round the film set and brought back memories and refresh our our minds. It was really great to watch again 40 years on.

Bit boring film
I looked forward to this film because i like Popeye and Robin Williams but guess i didn't enjoy it as much as i thought i would ingot bored in 10mins of the film then tried to watch again all the way through just bored me

Wholesome Disney fun.
This has a special meaning for me, Popeye was my dad's favourite childhood character and he could mimic Popeye to a tee. I was in Malta recently and went to the Popeye village which was great fun and reminded me of my dad.

Dated, but watchable.
Enjoyed watching this again, but obviously it is now rather dated having been made back in 1980s, however as I did visit the Popeye Village in Malta when on holiday in the 1980s it was interesting to watch.

A great film if you remember the cartoons
I great film for those who remember the television cartoon shows of yester-year. I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you're not old enough to have experienced them then some aspects of the film will be puzzling.

Very slow in posting
Wanted the film as many years ago I visited the location in Malta. I did watch it a lot of years ago but watched again with my 9 yr old Grandson
