Youth gangs took over the slums of Rio de Janiero during the 1960s and didn't relinquish their stronghold until the mid-1980s. Only a sucker wouldn't have turned to crime and this is exactly how naive teen Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues) views himself. His attempts in illegal activity fail as he finds potential victims too friendly. Equally unsuccessful in love, he regularly fails to lose his virginity. Blood spills throughout the streets of the Ciudad de Deus as gang leader Li'l Ze (Leandro Firmino da Hora) is challenged by local druglords and a gang of pre-teens known as the Runts. Rocket shoots all of this action with his weapon of choice, a camera.Director Fernando Meirelles combines visual flashiness with dark history in telling the story of three decades of unrest in underground Rio de Janiero. Technically flawless, the Brazilian film uses a rapid-cutting style to flash back and forth in time. Cinematographer Cesar Charlone shoots with an overexposed glow in a film that may seem numb to violence, but reveres photography. Director Meirelles was assisted by Katia Lund, a filmmaker who had previously shot in the Rio ghettos.

Unreadable disc
Now. I’ll start out by stating that I tried this on several devices and it was unable to be read on any of them. However the disc quality doesn’t look scratched up enough to not be read. So I understand why this particular disc was put up for sale. Regardless, I purchased a film I cannot watch.

Impact laden and great quality!
The film is an in depth look into the people of Rio De Janeiro, specifically the slums (favelas). It is great for the cast were unknowns and it was produced and directed by Fernando Mieralles, whom had made commercials. City of God (Cidade de Deus) I attest is in my personal list of 'top ten' movies of all times! It is compelling and very expressive. Plus, it's a great way to learn Portuguese.

Fabulous entertainment!
This is a magnificent film! The fact that it is a true story is utterly amazing. The actors all deserve awards, especially the children! I've watched it several times when it was on cable. I decided I just had to buy it so I could watch it whenever. This was a great value!!

I didn't expect the movie to be in Spanish and subtitled in English. Had I known this in advance I would not have purchased the movie. The story line and the actors are great it's just that having to read the lines take so much away from the movie.

Very interesting
This is one of the best films I have ever seen. It puts life in other countries in perspective and keeps you entertained from beginning to end. Do yourself a favor and watch this movie.

South American epic
The remarkable thing about this movie is portrayal of arrogance without the flash of Hollywood. It is a defining portrayal of crime and poverty in a heavily urban foreign area.
