Present-day Copenhagen. Six-year-old Greenlander Isaiah falls from an apartment-building roof. The police claim it was an accident. But Smilla Jasperson (Julia Ormond) knows Isaiah was afraid of heights. She is an expert in snow and, after examining his tracks, is sure Isaiah was terrified when he ran off the roof.The heroine of Peter Hřeg's novel SMILLA'S SENSE OF SNOW is a unique creation--half Greenlander, always an outsider, she is spiky, determined, and brilliant. In Bille August's movie, the beautiful Ormond conveys Smilla's intelligence and hostility as, full of suspicion and resentment, she investigates. She questions police and medical experts, discovering a muscle sample was taken from Isaiah's leg after he died. She ferrets out officials of the mining company where Isaiah's father worked before dying on a secret expedition. She learns from Elsa Lübing (Vanessa Redgrave) that the company keeps two sets of files. And she discovers there are those who want her investigation to stop. Sometimes helped, sometimes hindered by the mysterious Mechanic (Gabriel Byrne), Smilla pursues the riddle of Isaiah's death.

Great book good movie
I had just read the book and was curious as to how true to the movie the book was. They did a good job my only sort of complaint was that Julia Ormond was far too beautiful to play the role but loved the eye candy

Smilla's sense of Snow shows no sense
This is a very weird movie. It was not engaging or entertaining. People fall into the ocean with ice floating around and when they get out, no one shivers, or shows any reaction to the icy water. The few romanrtic scenes were awkward and didn't offer anything to the story.

Good story .. dated media
While the story is good ... this movie technically shows its 20 something year age and would benefit from a BD conversion.

Still a great movie! I always like Julia Ormond's acting
Was just as I remembered, wish it was available in Bluray but this DVD is in excellent condition, exactly as described.

This movie is not for everyone. You my have to watch several times to get the plot of the movie. Fans of Julia Ormond will enjoy.

Excellent!
Engaging all the way through. Julie Ormond gives an outstanding performance as a hardcore woman whom never gives up despite obstacles to solve a murder of a child friend and let his spirit rest in peace.
