A charming, low-key romantic comedy, MURPHY'S ROMANCE is full of the small pleasures missing from other pictures of its genre. James Garner, in his first Oscar-nominated performance, is the title character, Murphy. Garner lends his unique, down-home persona to the character while the film's writers endow the character with some memorable lines. Murphy's romance begins when Emma (Field) arrives in the small Arizona town where he lives. With her she brings her son Jake, and a feisty attitude. Though this sounds like a set-up from any number of other film romances, it becomes clear from their first meeting that the director, Martin Ritt, is more interested in his carefully observed setting, and in the comic flirtations between Murphy and Emma flirtations, than in making a conventional picture. In fact, some of the film's strongest comic scenes occur when the locals show off their color, including a hilarious sequence during a bingo game that showcases the amazing support cast. Of course, there is some drama and confrontation, but the focus remains on the setting and the relationship between Murphy and Emma, whose lengthy romance is the clear mark of one of the most highly enjoyable movie courtships ever seen.

Classic Romance in a Small Town Setting
Classic romance movie set in a small town where everyone knows everything about each other and it is one I never got the chance to see back in its heyday. Sally Fields & James Garner give their usual fantastic performances and Brian Kerwin gets my vote for a terrific performance - making you dislike him from the time he comes into the film and all the way to the end.

Great little movie
This just happens to be one of my favorite movies . Both stars are dear to me for very different reasons. Very old school love story movie. Kind of has a simple purity.

Fun and hopeful
Fields and Garner are wonderful in their respective roles. I genuinely enjoyed this movie which is why I bought a home DVD.

Good film with veteran actors with great performances
It`s believable, holds your interest, just a good romantic comedy the whole family could watch. Movie has a real good balance between the comedy and the romance.

Best Ever!
This movie is a genuine classic. James Garner's witty comebacks are something special. Sally Field is such a strong character. As usual, together they deliver. They couldn't have picked better actors for this!!💖

Great movie!
I've always been a fan of James Garner and Sally Field, so it was great to see them together. I saw this movie when it first came out, and I still enjoyed it when I rewatched it. Great movie!

A nice, funny, and romantic movie
Jokes are good. Story is fun, moves at a nice pace. The romance in the story is not overwhelming, it's obvious and subtle, but it's less romantic and more comedy.
