Product Information
Tecmo tries to stick a thorn in Pikachu's side by upping the with Monster Rancher: Battle Card GB.

The Monster Rancher series began on the PlayStation and featured monster breeding and fighting. Monster Rancher: Battle Card GB continues the series with gameplay similar to other trading card games, such as Pokémon Trading Card Game and SNK vs. Capcom: Cardfighter's Clash.

You begin your quest as either a young lad or lass in the quaint village of Aurora (not Illinois), vying for the distinction of most capable monster card fighter. Why cards? Monster breeding is a popular vocation among the town's adults, but as the game explains, real monsters are too much for children to handle. So, the kids have developed a safe but fun alternative in the form of a card game.

At the start of your adventure, you'll be greeted by several veteran card fighters. They'll provide you with some starter cards and a little bit of tutelage. Though there are only nine monsters in the game to battle with, there are a total of 100 cards to collect, most being specific attack or defense cards that apply to specific monsters. There are also helper cards that can heal your monsters while in battle or fight in their place for a turn.

When in battle, your opponent pits three of his monsters against three of yours. After each player draws five cards from his or her deck, they may make the decision to throw a few back into the pile. This procedure is called enguts-ing, and with each card you or your opponent throws back, you earn a "guts" point. Guts are required for executing a card, and each card requires a certain number of guts to use. The winner of the battle is the one who defeats all three of the other player's monsters first. Naturally, winning battles earns you more cards.

Battles known as "license matches" take place in the town's arena. Winning an arena battle earns you a higher ranking among other players. Most other fights take place in the ruins that surround the village. You are allowed to explore and battle within the ruins until you have been defeated in battle a certain number of times in one sitting. Then you're thrown out and must start from the entrance again.

Monster Rancher: Battle Card GB features one save slot that allows you to record your progress when not in battle. The game also supports head-to-head battles with other Game Boy owners via cable linkup.Product Identifiers
