A STAR IS BORN was conceived as a comeback vehicle for Judy Garland, who gives a fascinating and heartrending performance in perhaps the finest work of her career. This film was director George Cukor's first musical and first color picture; the tale of a doomed Hollywood couple, it was a remake of the 1937 William Wellman movie with Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. Garland plays young singer Esther, who saves Norman Maine (James Mason), a famous star, from making a fool of himself onstage. Maine is an alcoholic whose career is on the wane but who manages, nonetheless, to acknowledge Esther's talent and help her jump-start a career in Hollywood. But as her star rises and his declines, Maine's misery grows. Harold Arlen and Ira Gershwin provided Garland with songs that would become standards in her concert repertoire, including "The Man That Got Away," which earned an Oscar nomination for Best Song. A STAR IS BORN is also based on the earlier Cukor picture WHAT PRICE HOLLYWOOD?

Judy is awesome
How Judy did not win the Oscar for this performance, I’ll never know. She was amazing in this movie. However, I’m not a big fan of how they tried to reconstruct the missing scenes with the surviving audio and stills. It was distracting and would have worked better as a DVD extra than part of the film. Plus, at three hours, it drug in places. But it’s still a good movie with unforgettable acting by the star.

Not just one star but both of the headliners!
The ending itself is worth seeing the whole story. How can you beat the actors in the film???????? NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!

Well worth the purchase. Is as advertised.
disk plays well. Also it has Closed Captioning that I find helpful and have been disappointed with other DVD purchases that state they included Closed Captioning but don't. This one has as stated. It is a long movie but this disk has it all. Excellent

Superb comedy-drama; with songs!
Great tragic story with comic and musical overtones. Garland and, especially, Mason are superbly believable. Arlen/Gershwin score is top-flight. One of the best films of the 1950's.
