SynopsisIn this deliciously entertaining slice of Southern life (and death), inveterate hostess Gayden Metcalfe explains everything you need to know to host an authentic Southern funeral, such as: Can you be properly buried without tomato aspic? Who prepares tastier funeral fare, the Episcopal ladies or the Methodist ladies? And what does one do when a family gets three sheets to the wind and eats the entire feast the night before a funeral? Each chapter includes a delicious, tried-and-true Southern recipe you'll need if you plan to die tastefully any time soon, including Pickled Shrimp, Aunt Hebe's Coconut Cake, and the ubiquitous Bing Cherry Salad with Coca-Cola. Even if you've never been south of Rochester, this book will charm, it will entertain, and it will give you all the ingredients for the perfect Southern send-off. Book jacket.

  • One fun Southern story book with a some good traditionall recipes

If you like a good read with some fun Southern stories PLUS recipes to use for any group, please pick this cook book up. A good guide for hosting low key events. So nobody needs to die to have a good time. But the selection of Southern situations and how they are handled did make me laugh out loud. I am sure to use some of the recipes for any time I need a recipe for a group of folks. Maybe the Clubhouse TGIF???

  • No Excuse for Poor Manners, That Is

This is one of my top ten favorite books, and I have read it many times. I grew up in a small town, and although it wasn't in the Deep South, I recognize these people. Gayden Metcalfe and Charlotte Hays have a gift for saying what no one else wants to say out loud.

  • Fun with Funeral Food.

This is NOT a mystery novel. This is a book about planning a funeral, Southern Style with all the appropriate details. The recipes are classic. (I have already baked one. Very Good.) You will have insights into flowers, food, appetizers & cocktails that will give comfort and be delicious at the funeral you are planning. The suggestions are tasteful and humorous.

  • Puts the fun in funeral

I read this cookbook cover to cover and laughed so hard the dogs came running more times than I can count. I think all southerners will relate to just about every word in it. I doubt anyone else will have a clue. I wasn't all that interested in the recipes, as I already know how to fix most of them, but I did give one of the grits a try. This just happened to be the day before the eclipse and I drove to see the totality--about 90 minutes away. All the way home, instead of marveling at the solar event I had just seen, I was thinking about the leftover grits and anxious to get home to finish them. Does that give you a clue how good they were? I've now made a list of the top 15 or so recipes I want to try: Bourbon Boiled Custard is next and I'm expecting nothing but great.

  • Great cookbook

Unvarnished “gossip” about the marriage ritual and rites in a small Southern area. Might offend some die hard romantics but I have lived in enough small towns to recognize discomforting truth when I read it.

  • Regional Cookbook Fun

INGREDIENTS: Southern Hospitality, Good Cooks, Regional Pride, Timeless Gossip Humor. DIRECTIONS: 1) Depending on the season, prepare either a refreshing, ice-cube jingling glass of cold sweet tea, or a calming cup of hot tea, and situate yourself in a comfy spot, preferably in the gentle light of a sunny window. 2) Following your first beverage sip, open this not-especially-weighty, nicely-sized book, prepared for a prolonged visit with various members of Southern society, especially church ladies. 3) Be sure to read each very informative narrative before, in-between, and/or after recipes; this step will enhance the heartwarming enjoyment of the dish at hand. 4) Bear in mind any health issues you may have, because indulging in most, if not all, of these made-with-pride, eagerly-awaited-and-expected, specially-reserved-for-funerals-only, fatally rich concoctions could kill the unsuspecting reception visitor. NOTE: Buy more than one copy; one for you, one or more for others you love! This is a hidden treasure to be sure!

  • Cookbook

This is really a funny book....so cute, and has very good "southern" recipes. That's what it REALLY IS --- is a cookbook with lots of 'southern' whims.
