About buying one for home use...
Because it is a medical device, it can be hard to find DIY information on. It is purpose built as a human bladder scanner, so not easily adaptable for other ultrasound imaging purposes..
Because they are portable, they do get dropped/abused in the clinical setting. Be sure to buy one with a working probe...useless without.
I purchased a working one with good probe and no battery charger for home use as bladder scanner. Battery chargers for these are expensive and coveted, as are good batteries. Theses machines and chargers are designed around older NiMH technology, which is really sensitive to charging and discharge history, Lion is more forgiving. I adapted a Lithium Ion battery (7.2v 1200Ah) and adapted that for my use. Works perfectly.
You will probably end up with one that displays the "Calibration Due" message. You can ignore the message and still use it, but certainly not in a clinical setting.
Why did I buy it? I have a neurological condition that sometimes blocks my sense of how full or empty my bladder is. This has saved me a trip to Urgent Care a time or to, and is helpng me to retrain my bladder. Well worth the $600 or so you can plan on paying for a retired unit.
