  • Hank Mobley - "Soul Station"

If you like jazz music of the late 50's and early 60's, than you will love this wonderful album by tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley. I know I'm not alone when I say that hank Mobley may be one of the most under-rated tenor saxophone players of that period. I think he is up there with Cannonball Adderley and Sonny Rollins in that category. "Soul Station" finds Mobley with Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on the bass (both ex-patriots of the infamous Miles Davis Quintet), and the incomparable Art Blakey on drums. This is a highly respected quartet from that period of jazz history. The album contains just six tracks, but they are all marvelous. Because it is just the quartet, Mobley and Kelly get a healthy share of solos, while allowing Paul Chambers and Art Blakey their deserved time to demonstrate their talents. This was my first Hank Mobley album, but after listening to it, I felt compelled to pick up "Roll Call" soon after (same line up, with the addition of Freddy Hubbard, trumpet). I highly recommend this album !
