In the tradition of Track & Field comes Virtua Athlete 2000, where you can select from 10 different characters from all over the world. Characters have their own strengths and weaknesses, meaning they will perform better at some events and worse in others. If you do not like any of the pre-made selections, you can build your own athlete in the Player Edit mode. These athletes all start out on an amateur level, but as they progress through the events, they can build their own stats to make up for deficient areas. There are seven events in Virtua Athlete 2000, each rendered in 3D, that represent some of the more popular track and field events: The 100m Dash, the 110m Hurdles, the 1500m Race, the Long Jump, the High Jump, the Shot-put, and the Javelin. Many of these levels feature the same basic play, with players alternately pressing two buttons, one after the other, and then hitting a third button (referred to as an action button) at a specific time. The speed at which you do this varies from event to event. In some you'll want to save your stamina, while in others you must rely on a burst of speed, lunging forward toward the finish line at the right moment.
