Synopsis"For the better part of a week, nearly every man, woman, and child in Gander and the surrounding smaller towns stopped what they were doing so they could help. They placed their lives on hold for a group of strangers and asked for nothing in return. They affirmed the basic goodness of man at a time when it was easy to doubt such humanity still existed." When thirty-eight jetliners bound for the United States were forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland, on September 11, 2001, due to the closing of United States airspace, the citizens of this small community were called upon to come to the aid of more than six thousand displaced travelers. Roxanne and Clarke Loper were excited to be on their way home from a lengthy and exhausting trip to Kazakhstan, where they had adopted a daughter, when their plane suddenly changed course and they found themselves in Newfoundland. Hannah and Dennis O'Rourke, who had been on vacation in Ireland, were forced to receive updates by telephone on the search for their son Kevin, who was among the firefighters missing at the World Trade Center. George Vitale, a New York state trooper and head of the governor's security detail in New York City who was returning from a trip to Dublin, struggled to locate his sister Patty, who worked in the Twin Towers. A family of Russian immigrants, on their way to the Seattle area to begin a new life, dealt with the uncertainty of conditions in their future home. The people of Gander were asked to aid and care for these distraught travelers, as well as for thousands more, and their response was truly extraordinary. Oz Fudge, the town constable, searched all over Gander for a flight-crew member so that he could give her a hug as a favor to her sister, a fellow law enforcement officer who managed to reach him by phone. Eithne Smith, an elementary-school teacher, helped the passengers staying at her school put together letters to family members all over the world, which she then faxed. Bonnie Harris, Vi Tucker, and Linda Humby, members of a local animal protection agency, crawled into the jets' cargo holds to feed and care for all of the animals on the flights. Hundreds of people put their names on a list to take passengers into their homes and give them a chance to get cleaned up and relax. The Day the World Came to Town is a positively heartwarming account of the citizens of Gander and its surrounding communities and the unexpected guests who were welcomed with exemplary kindness., The True Story Behind the Events on 9/11 that Inspired Broadway's Smash Hit Musical Come from Away, Featuring All New Material from the Author When 38 jetliners bound for the United States were forced to land at Gander International Airport in Canada by the closing of U.S. airspace on September 11, the population of this small town on Newfoundland Island swelled from 10,300 to nearly 17,000. The citizens of Gander met the stranded passengers with an overwhelming display of friendship and goodwill. As the passengers stepped from the airplanes, exhausted, hungry and distraught after being held on board for nearly 24 hours while security checked all of the baggage, they were greeted with a feast prepared by the townspeople. Local bus drivers who had been on strike came off the picket lines to transport the passengers to the various shelters set up in local schools and churches. Linens and toiletries were bought and donated. A middle school provided showers, as well as access to computers, email, and televisions, allowing the passengers to stay in touch with family and follow the news. Over the course of those four days, many of the passengers developed friendships with Gander residents that they expect to last a lifetime. As a show of thanks, scholarship funds for the children of Gander have been formed and donations have been made to provide new computers for the schools. This book recounts the inspiring story of the residents of Gander, Canada, whose acts of kindness have touched the lives of thousands of people and been an example of humanity and goodwill., The True Story Behind the Events on 9/11 that Inspired Broadway's Smash Hit Musical Come from Away When 38 jetliners bound for the United States were forced to land at Gander International Airport in Canada by the closing of U.S. airspace on September 11, the population of this small town on Newfoundland Island swelled from 10,300 to nearly 17,000. • The kindness of the small town of Gander to ~7000 airline passengers who were diverted there and stranded for 5 days.

After seeing the musical "Come From Away," I wanted to know how much of the story was accurate, so I read this non-fiction book about the passengers on the 38 planes diverted to Gander on 9/11. It was written just about a half-year after the events, and really helps to flesh out the story. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 was that I didn't always agree with the author's choice of individuals and episodes to emphasize. But the writing and events were compelling, and this was an easy book to "gobble up."

  • The People of Gander

I liked the writing very much. The story was fascinating as it showed just how much was in volved in the hosting of the 9-11 visitors. The people of Gander are everything we all hope to be---generous, caring, and accepting of individual difference. Really showed people at their best. Touched my soul. The book was not in very good shape....but the story was exceptional. 💚💙

  • a must read

I really liked this book about one of the saddest times during my life. There are so many great people in this world, but often we only hear about the bad ones. What an amazing account of how the tragic events of 911 affected so many and how a community came together to meet the needs of those who couldn't return to the United States until if was safe. It was one of those books that you didn't want to put down.

  • 9/11 Canadians Shine

Heart warming, astounding account how a little town of less than 7000 folks take in 6000 passengers when the airfield was closed on 9/11 and TransAtlantic flights had to land. Throughout the reading, I remarked 'wow - could my town pull this off'? They went into action and pulled off a heroic feat of feeding, friending, and forever changing these passengers hearts and minds about mankind in the midst of the horror experienced on America's homeland. Gander, Newfoundland-- where real heroes live and give.

  • Gander Newfoundland and their unexpected guests on September 11, 2001

This book is based on the events of September 11, 2001 when all flights were directed to land immediately following the attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. It goes into depth about how well the passengers who landed in Gander Newfoundland were treated by the locals. The musical “Come From Away” was based on this book. We enjoyed reading this for our Bookclub.

  • The day the world came to town, excellent book

This is a great and interesting point of view from outside the United States news reports. It was lovely to read how kind people can be so generous in times of need.

  • A Great Feel Good Real Life Story

When US airspace was closed down on 9/11, planes from outside the US needed a place to land. Some landed in Gander, Newfoundland and the story of how the town and surrounding towns embraced the ‘visitors’ if really heart warming. It shows that deep down we all care about each other.

  • You won’t want to put the book down

This book is totally different than the Broadway musical based on the story. This book is moving and should be read to really understand the depth of what happened when the planes had to land on Gandy.
