Foyle's unflappable in just the perfect British way
Okay, right off the bat: I generally do not like British TV. Just not my cup of tea - so to speak. I am more of the action adventure Diehard type of movie-watcher. However, this series, while 'slow' by those terms, moves quickly and engagingly in a different way. Detective Foyle (or I should say Detective Chief Superintendent) and his driver, Samantha Stewart (Foyle doesn't drive) solve crimes along with his sergeant detective, Paul Milner. Milner was injured quite seriously in the war, and 'drafted' into working with Foyle. This series is smart, at times funny, challenging and never patronizing. It portrays WWII in as realistic a way as I suppose it would have been. Foyle is perfect as the man who cannot be ruffled, distracted, or bought. He's got perfect facial expressions which conveys what he is thinking. It deserves, definitely, 5 stars.

Wonderful series
I love this series. The stories are compelling and the actors are top notch. I have been watching it weekly on tv but wanted to have the full set to watch whenever I want. My husband bought this for me as a gift and we now enjoy watching it together. So far, no issues with the quality and I am glad to find it has closed captioning.

Foyle's War
Good entertainment with facts thrown in for good measure. The actors are all good. Five stars, definitely. (Two of the discs have something wrong. One stops just after one hour and the other sputters about at the beginning and then stops. But I did not want to take the trouble to return them) Just today, I took the whole box ... 8 seasons ... to a friend to enjoy and keep as long as he wants.

Awesome series - great quality discs
We knew we would totally love the series since already are fans. Was hesitant to purchase however, because some reviews said discs were scratched or unplayable. Now I know that reviews are for the product and the reviews from multiple sellers are combined together. Our set was new and excellent quality. For those who care about closed captions - Closed captions are available starting with Series 6.

Excellent show!
This is an excellent show with engaging characters and excellent plot lines. It presents a picture of WWII that is different from the usual - the stories of the civilians and some military personnel in light of the many historic events that happened on Britain's south coast. you lean a lot of interesting historical information while being thoroughly entertained!

Foyles War - Complete seasons Boxed set 1-8
We discovered this great series in Season 8...we loved it...superb acting...Michael Kitchen is the best detective yet...a Smarter' British 'Colombo'..if you will...great period setting...now starting at the beginning

Great series!
This series is one of the finest productions that British TV has produced. From the story line, the scenery to the actors, all were fantastic! Highly recommend!

Top British Mystery...
Anthony Horowitz has done an excellent job in creating mystery stories set during the early part of WWII in England. The 90-minute episodes keep you glued to the story to find "who done it." Michael Kitchen and the rest of the cast play perfectly to their characters. For those who did not watch this series when it aired originally (like me) this is a great package of episodes to pop into the DVD player when there's nothing of worth on elsewhere.

We're hooked.
We're hooked on this series. Michael Kitchen is great as the police detective. Honeysuckle Weeks is easy to like. The dramas are sufficiently compelling and the sets and costumes are authentic for the period of early WWII in southern coast England. Although we've only watched a few episodes, we've like what we saw and once a week watch another.If you like mysteries, dramas, and secrets revealed, this is the series for you.

My favorite -
Have to say, Foyle's War is my all time favorite series. Everything about it is 'top-drawer', as they say. Really respect the research that was done during that very black time in history. One grows up romanticizing WWII when watching American made movies. All the dancing, singing, heroism, and overall fluff put it in an entertaining - 'what a great time to be part of, a sense of unity and patriotism . Or, in more modern American movies, the sensational screening of blood and guts - more blasting apart the characters than story line. After watching Foyle's War, one can feel the massive multi-faceted oppression of this hideous time. As was said in Special Features - no one had escaped the struggles of war in one way or the other every one was affected. Families changed -- not only loved ones lost but many times the quality of 'family' had died as well. I've always admired the people of the British Isles, and it has amazed me how any culture could recover from such massive devastation. As well, brings out the ugly side of ones own countrymen - those who find it a time to profit rather than unite. Good casting - all the way around. My hat off to Anthony Horowitz for getting the right people to pull together his great work.
