ReviewsWith a trademark blend of heavy-handed polemic and sharply observed detail, Hedges writes a requiem for the American dream. . . . His breadth of reference, however, is refreshing, drawing on the likes of Plato, Émile Durkheim, and Eric Voegelin--and lots of Marx--for reinforcement. . . . [A] fiery sermon that weighs the nation and finds it wanting., Chris Hedges is perhaps today's most important public intellectual, and America: the Farewell Tour is perhaps his most important book. If we as a society are able to move past our current 'sickness unto death,' as Kierkegaard put it, it will be in great measure thanks to books like this one., Hedges writes a requiem for the American dream. . . . [A] fiery sermon that weighs the nation and finds it wanting., An exceedingly dark, passionate, and provocative book, certain to arouse controversy but offering a point of view that needs to be heard., Chris Hedges wants us to face realities. Our society is unraveling, institutionally and structurally, and is being replaced by the corporate state of merging big business and government. Commercialism overwhelms civic values, impoverishes its subjects, and reaches into childhoods bypassing parental authority. Poverty, addiction, gambling, and hopelessness spread like epidemics. Only we the people can reverse the disintegration of democracy by plutocracy. In America: The Farewell Tour, Chris Hedges depicts the horrifying truths on the ground from which resistance rises to jolt us into an active, realizable culture of reconstruction.

SynopsisChris Hedges's profound and provocative examination of America in crisis is "an exceedingly...provocative book, certain to arouse controversy, but offering a point of view that needs to be heard" ( Booklist ), about how bitter hopelessness and malaise have resulted in a culture of sadism and hate. America, says Pulitzer Prize--winning reporter Chris Hedges, is convulsed by an array of pathologies that have arisen out of profound hopelessness, a bitter despair, and a civil society that has ceased to function. The opioid crisis; the retreat into gambling to cope with economic distress; the pornification of culture; the rise of magical thinking; the celebration of sadism, hate, and plagues of suicides are the physical manifestations of a society that is being ravaged by corporate pillage and a failed democracy. As our society unravels, we also face global upheaval caused by catastrophic climate change. All these ills presage a frightening reconfiguration of the nation and the planet. Donald Trump rode this disenchantment to power. In his "forceful and direct" ( Publishers Weekly ) America: The Farewell Tour , Hedges argues that neither political party, now captured by corporate power, addresses the systemic problem. Until our corporate coup d' tat is reversed these diseases will grow and ravage the country. "With a trademark blend of...sharply observed detail, Hedges writes a requiem for the American dream" ( Kirkus Reviews ) and seeks to jolt us out of our complacency while there is still time., Chris Hedges's profound and provocative examination of America in crisis is "an exceedingly...provocative book, certain to arouse controversy, but offering a point of view that needs to be heard" ( Booklist ), about how bitter hopelessness and malaise have resulted in a culture of sadism and hate. • Vintage Hedges, illuminates the U.S. citizen condition.

Excoriating and Great. Confirms everything we see and experience as subjects of an evil corporate empire. Total loss of agency as a voter. Corporate control of Public Education. A militarized state aimed at poor people of color but increasingly at poor citizens of any stripe. A systematic analysis of cast systems within the U.S. empire, women, people of color and the poor all discriminated against equally while the wealthy move forward into a system of inequality where they pay no taxes and feed off the hopeless while turning their rage ridiculously toward their poor neighbor. As he reminds us often, it's a recipe for Fascism. I've followed his books since 2006. One of our countries greatest minds and humanitarians.

  • Enjoy the short amount of time left as The United States once was for some of our freedom

It tells you whats really happening in the U.S. today, and the history of how we got to this point in our country which is the opposite of the propaganda that the political owned state media is saying. Its eye opening material if you are open to the TRUTH!!

  • Revealling of the disgusting lack of ethics toward and methodical predation of their fellow men.

Raised my awareness of devious marketing in casinos and the moral bankruptcy of the super rich -- not much different from that of low life (whose criminality is limit by poverty).

  • An Accurate Critique of America

Chris Hedges' analysis of America is hard to read, as an American, but extremely accurate and important. Includes very enlightening comparisons to the waning years of other empires and their delusional, narcissistic leaders/despots. Recommended.

  • America: The Farewell Tour

Hedges book is frightening and truthful. It is too bad the ignorant masses have been manipulated without being aware of their slow walk to the gallows.

  • America The Farewell Tour

I gets off into directions such as prostitution and the military with the myths surrounding these two occupations which I had never thought of before as being part of corporatism.
