I agonized over reviews of different subs for awhile before choosing this one. I have no regrets. It is probably overkill for my ~2000 cubic foot (13.5x20x8) home theater room. It can provide crushing bass but also blends well.
My only hesitation before purchase were some reports of amp failures on these THX models. There is a full 5 year warranty but it requires shipping the whole sub back- so save your packing materials! My personal theory is that some of these amp failures were due to power supply issues. I ran a separate dedicated 20 amp circuit just for the sub to prevent such problems. So far so good and I've pushed it pretty hard in the brief time I've had it.
One of the reasons I chose this sub over others in its range like the VTF15 is I didn't want any port chuffing. My ideal sub position in my room is about 5 feet behind the MLP. I'm glad to say that I haven't heard any even with Pacific Rim at reference level. I still need to play the intro scene of EOT and see how it handles it.
I really have nothing negative to say about this purchase except it almost killed me getting it upstairs by myself! But seriously, it is large and very heavy.
Stellar subwoofer that sets a new industry standard.
This new 15" THX subwoofer has quickly earned a place among the best subs available for the money. No port noise chuffing in THX mode with any material like Edge of Tomorrow opening, unlike my PSA V1801 that chuffs like crazy. You simply cannot overdrive this subwoofer with the protection circuitry built in. Very tight and articulate, low distortion bass. Build quality is superb and the HDF cabinet is completely inert. It's very heavy for good reason, and you can tell it's more solid over MDF cabinets. Shipped well protected and the black finish is smooth. This 15" THX sub has more clean output over my 18" PSA sub and I prefer low distortion bass which can actually sound quieter because harmonics are louder than the signal they are trying to produce. 5 year warranty and Monolith told me they will pay for return shipping if needed. Cannot find anything to fault unless you want on-board EQ or remote control which my processor handles. The components are built by very well respected Claridy audio. Now I'm looking at their Monolith amps which have also earned a cult-like following (built by ATI).
I came from another 15” sub (duals) that’s popular in the avs forums but I ended up trying this sub and it is a beast!! Hits down lows, not port chuff or odd noises. Just sounds clear loud and low. Planning on adding a second
