SynopsisA chance meeting between a riding instructor and a run-down horse unveils a hidden talent and sparks a remarkable rise to fame in this nonfiction illustrated middle grade book by the author of the Marguerite Henry's Ponies of Chincoteague series. Snowman, an Amish plow horse, was bound for the meat market when Harry deLeyer, a Long Island riding instructor, spotted him at auction. After making eye contact with the gentle giant, deLeyer decided to purchase him for eighty dollars. At first, Snowman was just a horse that children rode during lessons, but when deLeyer sold him to a neighbor, the horse had other ideas. He would jump the high fences so he could return home. Harry then began training Snowman as a show jumper. Less than two years out of the plow fields, Snowman won the 1958 horse show jumping Triple Crown--the American Horse Shows Association Horse of the Year, Professional Horseman's Association Champion, and Champion of Madison Square Garden's Diamond Jubilee. Snowman was inducted into the Show Jumping Hall of Fame in 1992., A twist of fate brings a man and horse together in this remarkable true story now available in a new version adapted by the author of the Marguerite Henry's Ponies of Chincoteague series. • Snowman aka Mr.Chips

Only the last 3/4 of the book is true. The name the horse was MR.Chips, When he was purchased from father in Irwin Pa. My father bought him from a farm in the area. I guess they thought the story would be better adding the Amish. To my knowledge there's no Amish in the area. I'm 78 , with a memory is, just don't ask where I was yesterday. Thanks, for allowing me to get this off my chest! Dorothy Wallace Smith

  • For horse lovers of all ages

This true story is a heartwarming tale of an exceedingly strong bond between a man and a horse. A wonderful read for horse lovers of any age. Small spoiler alert: stop reading if you don't want to know ANYTHING before reading...but this book meant more to me for it was eerily similar in some aspects to the horse I purchased for my daughter. Both flea bitten greys with Arab blood, both saved from the meat truck. And my daughter formed a very strong bond with her Valentine, riding her bareback with no bridle or halter...just her and her horse flying through the fields with just leg commands. They won 5 ribbons at the first show they entered and like Snowman, Valentine loved the applause and cheers of the crowd. So this was more special for me.
