If you really are an absolute beginner, this is the crochet manual for you.
I'm not sure about 'compelling' but this is probably the most useful and practical book a beginner could wish for! I bought it as a present and have already been presented with a little bag and ear warmers! The text is easy to understand, the illustrations really do illustrate and the sensible spiral binding means the book stays open at the place you need .... and it is reasonably priced. Lovely photos.
