Product Information

First published in the United States in 1949 and widely condemned as obscene, The Egyptian outsold every other novel published that year, and remains a classic; readers worldwide have testified to its life-changing power. It is a full-bodied re-creation of a largely forgotten era in the world s history: the Egypt of the 14th century B.C.E., when pharaohs and gods contended with the near-collapse of history s greatest empire. This epic tale encompasses the whole of the then-known world, from Babylon to Crete, from Thebes to Jerusalem, while centering around one unforgettable figure: Sinuhe, a man of mysterious origins who rises from the depths of degradation to become personal physician to Pharaoh Akhnaton."

  • Worth reading more then once!

I've read Mika Waltari's book the Egyptian several times. It reflects the daily life lived in ancient Egypt. Excellent research, compelling protagonists, fast moving story line with unexpected twists. I read this book twenty years ago, and then read it again. I really enjoyed it and found the "mummy making" process to be fascinating as well as accurate. I misplaced my copy long ago and purchased it again for my Mom to read. She though mummy's were the realm of fiction and horror. She is as hooked by this as I was. The author is amazing both historically and in fiction. I loved it. So, if you wonder about life in the ancient past, but hate dusty dry non-fiction histories? This is the book to read. I hadn't read any other books by this author, and wondered if there were more. Now after a search I've found other works by this author, and I'm looking forward to reading them. It breaths life into the sandy, dusty tombs and the rituals of the past. Somethings never change, that too is reflected in the 3 dimensional people portrayed here!

  • Describes life in ancient Egypt

One of the best novels i ever read. Mika Waltari wrote many historic novels but are unfortunately hard to find, no reprints. This is a real gem as he describes life in ancient Egypt. Fantastic story.
