Works well for what I need.
So obviously not a product you really want to buy, but my new German Shepherd puppy was attacking my thirteen year old Kerry Blue Terrier quite badly.
I was worried it would ruin the relationship if the behaviour continued. Also although my Kerry is quite mild these days, he is a 20kg terrier, so I did need this to stop quickly for both their sake. I looked at vibration collars and even e-collars. Both of which, if used correctly and humanely should do the job. I don't judge other people and what they do but an e-collar poses problems for me and is a line I wouldn't cross unless I had no other choice. It would have to be life and death for me to use one of those.
The vibration collar I looked at wasn't fully waterproof which put me off. Dogs use water bowls so collars get dunked in those.
So I bought this. The pup wears the collar at specific times when I know it will play rough and so far I have sprayed her about three times paired with the word stop.
Like a clicker, the spray collar creates a stimulus that doesn't happen in real life so you avoid the superstitious associations you might get with say a water bottle. It is distracting and I suspect, annoying, but not painful.
Thus far it works, I would not use it too often as you can inoculate some dogs against the spray by doing that. When I am not there it is off her because it might snag on something and hurt her neck.
Again this is a German Shepherd, having tried redirection with food and toys. Having tried timeouts and interventions with a long line I just needed something to say stop before the bad behaviour got rolling. This works well for that.
It is a stop button and for this particular dog in this circumstance it is the least worst option and works well. So inside limited circumstances of needing to stop a problem behaviour quickly and without a lot of pain I would recommend it.
