Good budget-friendly option for transferring old tapes to digital
I had some old home movies on 8mm and Hi8 tapes which I've been meaning to digitize for years. This is a "pro-sumer" deck with built-in time base corrector (TBC) which helps to stabilize jittery video. Unlike the TBCs used with professional VTRs, the EV-S3000's internal TBC has no controls to adjust, something which I would have preferred. Nevertheless, the two tapes that I have managed to transfer so far have looked as clean as I could expect considering their age of 18-23 years. There's definitely some image degradation but that's due to the oxide on the tapes slowly wearing away. There's nothing that can be done to halt that process which is why it's important to transfer them to digital sooner rather than later. I have roughly a dozen more 8mm and Hi8 tapes to go. For connectivity, I hooked up the S-Video and RCA audio outputs to a Canopus ADVC110 interface box which then connects via Firewire to my Mac. The EV-S3000 also has a set of monitor outputs which are handy because they show the on-screen displays for tape counter or time code. I ran those to an old Sony TV for previewing the tapes.
