Good plane for advanced hobbyists
I got my FMS P-40B a few days ago. Took quite a bit time to set it up correctly. Did a successful maiden this morning. And here is my review of this plane.
Pros:
1. compact size for a fully functional plane,
2. nice scale details,
3. rotating retractable gears with spring-loaded gear doors,
4. flys great when you set it up correctly.
Cons:
1. high wing load. you need to stay on your toes when flying this plane.
2. poor instruction manual (I assume the plane itself has been updated over time, but the manual hasn't).
3. the ESC came loose, flapping around in the fuselage (had to glue it down near the intake port, coz it weights quite a bit).
4. The ball link on the elevator doesn't match the pushing rod socket (ended up drilling the socket to fit the oversized ball link. And an extra PE plate to secure it in place).
5. Will take you hours to set it up correctly. And only if you are an experienced hobbyist, who has the patience to read all instructions. Most servo horns were not aligned properly. Flap and aileron servos rest 30 degrees offset on neutral. Had to refit all of them. Pushing rods were all different in length out of the box. Need to adjust all of them (with no instructed length to follow what so ever).
Overall, at this price (200$ before tax), I would give this plane 4 stars if there weren't any issues with servos, ball links, and ESC. But only 3 with all that trouble.
I would recommend buying this plane only when its on discount, with a price lower than 160$, at its current state.
Took one picture right after I came back from the maiden. Dog stepped on the cockpit hatch, had to reorder one.
My setup:
LemonRX stabilizer plus 7-ch,
OrangeRX Tx10i,
Hobbystar 3000mAh 11.1V, 3S 30C LiPo,
Maiden with AS3X only, 85% servo rate all Ch, 25% expo on Ali and Ele.
