Nearly ten years after his last screen appearance (in 1975's TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA), the Tokyo Terror stomps again -- albeit awkwardly -- in Toho Studios' highly publicized bid to reestablish the Green Guy's popularity in Japan and overseas. More a remake of the 1956 classic GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS than a continuation of the series, GODZILLA 1985 represents an attempt to revamp the Big G with STAR WARS movie technology and a more "serious" approach. Unfortunately, Toho's efforts may have gone astray, since the film resorts to exactly the same cheesy conventions that had endeared the series to bad-movie buffs around the world: flimsy cardboard buildings, inconsistencies in the monster's size from one scene to the next, and the same mock-profound commentary from Raymond Burr. The only notable additions consist of some interference from those evil superpowers, America and the Soviet Union, who both want to nuke Godzilla before he decides to direct his rage somewhere other than Japan. Though the film did manage to jump-start the franchise, spawning several high-tech sequels (continuing with GODZILLA VS. BIOLLANTE and 1995's GODZILLA VS. THE DESTROYER), its cheesiness spelled certain doom for the series in overseas markets, with minimal legitimate U.S. distribution until their arrival on video amid advance hype for Sony-TriStar's mega-budgeted 1998 version.

Much better without outside influence.
The movie, like the original, has a lot of scene's cut or shortened so new scenes could be added for the "Americanized" version. No disrespect to Raymond Burr but I want to see Godzilla in a Godzilla movie not him and not the other cheesy American actors they put into the Americanized Godzilla 1984. I am so glad they finally released the original Japanese version at a price I could afford and that would run on my blu ray player. I am hoping when Shin Gojira(Godzilla Resurgence) is released in dvd/blu ray and at the theatre they do not change the film to "Americanize" it. Leave it as God(zilla) and Toho intended.

Godzilla1985...
Or so it was called when it was released in theatres here in the US. It's a direct sequel to the original from 1954. This is the original uncut version with 20 extra minutes not seen before. This is the 1st time this version has been available on either dvd or blu ray as the original was VHS only. Some bootleg copies have been available made from the Japanese disc, I own one, but because of licensing rights it's taken over 30 years to get this movie in this form. Great value for an under appreciated but excellent movie.

One of the Best in the Franchise
This is NOT Godzilla 1985, rather Return of Godzilla (the original Japanese version from 1984). This version takes the film much more seriously and doesn't try to make the Soviet Union look like the bad guys like the American version does.

Finally found this movie in bluray format.
I've wanted this movie for a long time and only available in VHS tape. It's a piece of nostalgia and remember seeing this movie at the drive-in when I was 10.

Godzilla Returns
One of my favorite Godzilla movies. Good story, returns Godzilla to the force of nature he is. Brought me back to my childhood.

Start of the Heisei Era
Hadn't seen this movie since I was a kid, so it was nice to watch this version as opposed to the US version. It was nice to see the version that came out in Japan.
