Just Possibly The Best LF Tripod Head
This may be the perfect large-format tripod head. My 8X10 is home-built and weighs on the order of 11 pounds, somewhat more than the Manfrotto 410's supposed to be capable of handling. Not an issue. Any of my other heads suffered from "creep:" you'd get the composition correct, tighten the head, and watch the camera slowly tilt or swivel. A geared head completely solves that problem. Best of all, the 410 has a spring-loaded quick-release feature, making it possible to quickly-position the camera and then fine-adjust with gears, and those gears don't creep.
If there's a problem with the 410, it's size/weight. This is a long way from an aluminum ball head. Camera, 410, and heavy-duty tripod can total nearly 20 pounds. This isn't for field photography, unless you have a cart. C'est la vie. At the price of 8X10 film, I want no movement when I'm doing long exposures, and the 410 insures that.
