Great Athlete, Great Man
This book is a forthright and insightful recounting of the life of an incomparable athlete and an exceptional man. Perhaps most remarkable is that, given the choice, I am confident it was far more important to him to be recognized and remembered as a good man, a good human being.
I hope that his life lessons will be amplified by the exceptional athletes of the day. He was an active participant in the Civil Rights Movement in it’s early stages and his values and commitment were unwavering and steadfast.
I recommend reading this book and learning more about this man. He was the Jackie Robinson of his era — he was a proud and yet humble recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Bill Russell did not believe that athletes should be role models. He was, however, an exceptional role model. I believe that he would be pleased to know that this was not because of his legendary athletic accomplishments, but rather because of Bill Russell, the Man.
