Very Gentle Same-Sex High-School Romance
The five-volume Kase-san and ______ series follows the diligent, child-like Yamada and the tom-boy Kase-san as love blooms between them in high school and as they come to form life-plans that will keep them together during their college years and beyond. This is strictly a very sweet, very gentle romance. In the West, this would be called “shoujo ai” and not “yuri”, because the theme is love as such and there is no depiction of sexual intimacy. In fact, references to sex as such are in the form of the embarrassment of the characters about that aspect of their attraction one to another. The art is generally very polished. The conventions of manga are observed, so that images range from something like representation realism (but with absurdly large eyes) to ideograms. Those repelled by these conventions may not care for the work. A successor volume, Yamada and Kase-san, will eventually be available. The content that has appeared in serialization so far continues the romance in their college years. Please be aware that some eBay sellers have misrepresented copies with remainder marks as “Brand New”. These copies are less collectible, and result in lower remuneration to the producers, which means that fewer such works will be produced in future.
