Reviews"Since 1945, the front-line realities of Germanys Russian war have been submerged under so much myth that a book like this represents a welcome reality check. The 132nds story, and Bidermanns, are part of the master narrativeof a demodernizingWehrmacht, whose men held against unbelievable odds and in the end were sacrificed to one of historys most purely evil causes. It is a story worth making available to American readers."Dennis Showalter , author of Tannenberg: Clash of Empires "Stands head and shoulders above the many other books in this genre. Bidermanns style is crisp, succinct, and lucid and Zumbro has done a great job of translating."David Glantz , coauthor of The Battle of Kursk and When Titans Clashed, "Since 1945, the front-line realities of Germany's Russian war have been submerged under so much myth that a book like this represents a welcome reality check. Released for the first time in English, it offers battle descriptions of unprecedented detail. Yet, this memoir goes deeper into a typical German infantryman's wartime experience, lending insight into the mind of a soldier fighting far from home, describing the lives of Russian peasants trapped between two brutal antagonists, and recalling the humiliation of defeat and surrender, and the brutality of the Soviet gulags."-- History Book Club Review

SynopsisA German soldier's World War II memoir that traces the grueling experiences of an army marching on the road to ruin from the first march into Russia in 1941 to final surrender in 1945. A History Book Club and Military Book Club selection., In the hell that was World War II, the Eastern Front was its heart of fire and ice. Gottlob Herbert Bidermann served in that lethal theater from 1941 to 1945, and his memoir of those years recaptures the sights, sounds, and smells of the war as it vividly portrays an army marching on the road to ruin. A riveting and reflective account by one of the millions of anonymous soldiers who fought and died in that cruel terrain, In Deadly Combat conveys the brutality and horrors of the Eastern Front in detail never before available in English. It offers a ground soldier's perspective on life and death on the front lines, providing revealing new information concerning day-to-day operations and German army life. Wounded five times and awarded numerous decorations for valor, Bidermann saw action in the Crimea and siege of Sebastopol, participated in the vicious battles in the forests south of Leningrad, and ended the war in the Courland Pocket. He shares his impressions of countless Russian POWs seen at the outset of his service, of peasants struggling to survive the hostilities while caught between two ruthless antagonists, and of corpses littering the landscape. He recalls a Christmas gift of gingerbread from home that overcame the stench of battle, an Easter celebrated with a basket of Russian hand grenades for eggs, and his miraculous survival of machine gun fire at close range. In closing he relives the humiliation of surrender to an enemy whom the Germans had once derided and offers a sobering glimpse into life in the Soviet gulags. Bidermann's account debunks the myth of a highly mechanized German army that rolled over weaker opponents with impunity. Despite the vast expanses of territory captured by the Germans during the early months of Operation Barbarossa, the war with Russia remained tenuous and unforgiving. His story commits that living hell to the annals of World War II and broadens our understanding of its most deadly combat zone. Translator Derek Zumbro has rendered Bidermann's memoir into a compelling narrative that retains the author's powerful style. This English-language edition of Bidermann's dynamic story is based upon a privately published memoir entitled Krim-Kurland Mit Der 132 Infanterie Division . The translator has added important events derived from numerous interviews with Bidermann to provide additional context for American readers., Gottlob Bidermann's riveting and reflective combat memoir vividly conveys the brutality and horrors of the Eastern Front in detail never before available in English. • Rare Translation of German Combat Soldier Experience in World War II

A relatively rare English translation of a personal history of combat and conditions on the eastern front in Europe from the perspective of a German soldier during World War II. Whereas the vast majority of history books pertaining to Germany’s role in World War II focus on Hitler and the upper echelons of the Nazi hierarchy and the atrocities they perpetrated, this book focuses almost exclusively on military action at the “trench level.” The author, Gottlob Bidermann, who starts out as a private and eventually makes it up to lieutenant, provides a detailed, visceral account of military actions, living conditions and their effects seldom reported outside of Germany. The account is very readable, well-organized, compelling and informative, which I suspect is thanks to the translator, Derek Zumbro. The book includes a good assortment of photographs of the author and key military figures and comrades in his world as a soldier on the eastern front, as well as useful appendices summarizing the military actions Bidermann was involved in, a list of German military ranks, and a glossary of definitions of the German military jargon that Bidermann uses in the book. The only elements missing in this book that would make it even more readable are: (1) a series of maps of the geographical areas covered and the associated place names, and, (2) an index. I highly recommend this book for people interested in World War II history.
