Good iPod upgrade
This is a sparkling-sounding portable music player, which is a decent upgrade from an iPod classic. Both players have Wolfson DACs, each being good in their own ways. However, the AK Jnr a crisper, tighter treble, cleaner mid-range, a punchier, more extended bass, and a wider soundstage.
The interface is slower and clunkier than the iPod classic, but then what do you expect? Apple is the market leader in making intuitive, easy to use interfaces and devices. But Apple doesn't seem to care very much about audio excellence, hence the omission of lossless and high bitrate music formats from the Apple Music Store.
The AK Jnr can't be synced with iTunes, although music can be transferred via drag and drop (either from iTunes to Windows or within Windows). Transferring album art seems hit and miss. Playlists can also be transferred from iTunes, although there seems to be some track order issues.
Battery life on the AK Jnr is comparable with the iPod classic, if using wired headphones. Battery life is less with wireless headphones, for obvious reasons.
There are probably MP3 players better suited for the mass market, but the AK Jnr is a great portable music player for audiophiles or anyone who listens to lossless and HD music formats. There are some nice design touches, like the volume wheel, but what you are paying for with the AK Jnr is the upgraded Wolfson DAC, and the sparkling sound quality (even with mid-priced headphones, like Sol Campbell V10s or Bose on-ear headphones).
