This wacky comedy classic directed by Stanley Kramer features one of the largest collections of American comedians ever brought together on celluloid, resulting in the kind of far-out comic gem that only the 1960s could dish out. Filled with sharp one-liners, plenty of pratfalls and double takes, and unstoppable slapstick humor, this film never stops entertaining. The laughs come mostly from vehicle accidents of all kinds: car crashes, bike accidents, airplane failures, and almost everything else imaginable. But a good amount of humor is also lent to major wrestling matches, terrible mix-ups and misunderstandings, and increasingly absurd personalities such as Mrs. Marcus (Ethel Merman), the screeching and impossible mother-in-law. The film even laughs at itself, showing its flimsy cardboard sets as characters punch out walls or accidentally explode whole boxes of dynamite. The cast includes such favorites as Jonathan Winters, Phil Silvers, Milton Berle, Buddy Hackett, Mickey Rooney, Sid Caesar, Spencer Tracey, Terry-Thomas, and Dick Shawn, among countless others.Brilliantly simple, the plot concerns a caravan of motorists who witness a terrible accident on a dangerously windy California highway. The Full Un-cut masterpiece!
How wonderful to be able to see this film in its full, uncut form - as it was seen at the time if its premiere back in 1963! Of course, I never had the chance to see this longer version before. Save for a scant few short scenes where the original footage was lost, appropriate production stills of those scenes are used alongside the original soundtrack. Best you can get
Originally released at 3 1/2 hours, this classic has been brutally edited for television over the years and some of the footage inexplicably lost. This is the fullest version to date, although my memory recalls a second or two from the gas station scene STILL missing. This really is great however and there are even scenes included where the only source they had included Thai-language subtitles! The extras, like the original commercials, etc. are very enjoyable. Love the movie but this copy is the worst!
I have a copy in dvd and wanted the one with the extra footage and in Blu-ray. Purchased this on Nov 5 and it was delivered a little over a week later. Decided to watch it with company during Christmas time (Dec. 24). Nothing but problems with this dvd set: Color fades in and out and at one point the screen picture freezes with sound (dialogue ongoing) and a printed message appears stating there is no scene for this part of the movie.
