  • Amazing series.

Fans (and the rest of you!) should take note of a new Blu-Ray release of Carl Sagan's Cosmos: A Personal Voyage. Decades of noise have been removed, and now the picture and sound are better than I could have imagined or hoped. The colors in particular are vibrant and stunning. In the early 1980s, Cosmos lit up homes with its far-reaching world view, creating a legacy that resonates today. Episode 1, which I just sampled as a test, describes our point in history as that of standing on the shores of the cosmic ocean. We talk of history as a thing in the past, but in truth most of our history is yet to be written. For most of human history we will be spacefaring. We will live on a community of worlds with Earth perhaps a distant memory, a tale told to children when they go to sleep. Our history now is bloody. It is full of wars over small pieces of land, spawned from feuds over family, politics and forgotten concepts of religious heresy. When we turn on the TV today, we see rancor, tribalism and the politics of division, the idea that we are divided into groups and the groups, being incompatible with each other, must beat the other to all the prizes Earth has to offer. But fast forward a thousand years, just as we have done a hundred times before as a species, and suddenly you will see that the most emotive topics of today seem as meaningless as the time when Britain changed from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, sparking riots and chants of "Give us our eleven days back!"

  • Still entertaining, but showing its age

As a viewer of the origin version on DVD, picture and sound are much improved on this Blu-Ray. Although there are some update segments at the end of some episodes, they are from the early 1990s. That is a long time ago in terms of cosmology advancements since then. For example, we know a LOT more about Mars than we did in the 1990s. The historical reenactments are interesting and educational. Carl Sagan remains charming and intelligent throughout the series. One wonders what more he could have accomplished without his untimely passing at age 62. There is a nice but short introduction by his spouse Ann Druyan. I have a Region A Sony X800 Blu-Ray player, but this disc noted as Region B played with no problems at all.

  • Excellent transfer and region free discs

Fans of the original series will be thrilled. Via Vision has done a great job bringing a TV series recorded on late '70s tape into high definition, despite the obvious limitations of the source material. I confirm that the Via Vision discs are REGION FREE, despite the labelling. They do play on Region A (North American) blu ray players.

  • We are Star Stuff...

This Ultimate Edition of Cosmos really impressed Me. The producers of this remastered series went all out to give the best possible presentation of this classic documentary. The picture has been cleaned up and presented in the original 1.33:1 full frame format as was originally aired, and you can see evidence of the video master used from time to time. The audio has been skillfully remixed into a 5.1 channel soundtrack and music blends in nicely (sometimes prominently) into the surrounds. Nothing gimmicky, just an entertaining audio remix that blends right with the visuals. If you love Cosmos, and are considering owning the series, this is highly recommended!

  • Nice to have this re-mastered onto Blu-ray Disc

A great job putting all the episodes onto a modern media. This is a pleasant trip down memory lane for those of us that watched this on TV, then bought the VHS tapes. Now, decades later the show is still quite entertaining and really was an outstanding production. Many hours of entertainment here. Worth the $31 investment, for sure. I confirm that this 9337369010977 set from viavision does work here in the US with my Samsung BD-J5700 player.

  • i already did a review

The content was excellent hence three stars. It is a little behind the times but the show is mostly a history lesson anyway. The quality of the remaster to Blu Ray is just ok I don't see much difference between this and the DVD set I have, at least not enough to call it "Ultimate". One thing it has that my DVD set doesn't is an annoying flickering white line across the bottom of the picture of about a third of the episodes.

  • Great docuseries

Carl Sagan is, of course, unforgettable as the presenter of this fabulous series. The only complaint I have for this Blu-Ray set is the lack of subtitles and other options in the menus. Other than that, fantastic!

  • This is Sagan, beautiful and very well done!

This is a classic. So boastfully done and still very educative. To see it again was a travel in time to the first time I saw Cosmos.
