Fix your furnace right!
If you have a Bell and Gossett motor/pump combination circulating hot water around your home, and the coupler fails, it will make a lot of noise and then you will be without heat. This is a bad situation, especially in the middle of winter. You might take a look at the equipment, and realize that it is all fairly vintage stuff from the 60's or 70's. You might start to worry that you won't be able to fix it. You might try to make a coupler of your own and find that :
A). The pump won't start (because there is no capacitor on the motor and a direct coupling creates too much initial load). or...
B). The jury-rigged spring set up you created is just stiff and off-balance enough to make the pipes vibrate noisily throughout the house, causing your wife to become very displeased. (You might explain that it is far better than freezing, but that will only go so far.)
Lucky for you, these lovely new old-stock parts are readily available, easy to install, work perfectly and can be had for under $15.00. I urge you to buy several, so you will never be without!
