Better than nothing.
I already have two of them. They do need to go into the shop for cleaning and repair, from time to time, because it is no longer legal to buy a new VCR/DVD combo recorder in the U.S. Most other countries still sell them new.
Also, after 6 years, both of them have had an issue with parts of the board needing replacing, because pieces on it just wear out or go bad over time.
The reason I have them is because I do not have cable or satellite, or any other sort of pay TV. Invariably, over-the-air broadcast programs either have nothing good on, or have two or more good shows at the same time. So, I watch one and record one or two others on VHS tape. The tape is not as sharp as HD TV, but it is better than nothing. However, sometimes my schedule is so hectic that I may have 15 or more shows on tape waiting to be seen. As such, free standing DVRs are of now use, because most, even if good, will only hold about 5 shows. I have also used the units to dub some old, personal VHS tapes to DVD, because tapes will deteriorate over time and there are some memories that I want to save forever.
