Having found that when I have tried to take long exposure night shots, and investing in a tripod, it was suggested to me that I should try a remote control to open the shutter. Having Googled what model and type of remote I needed for my Nikon D3000, I found that this was recommended, and thought "Why not!", and ordered it.
When it arrived I looked at the size of the bx and thought "It's big!", but the actual unit itself is very small, 2.5 inches in length, just under 1.25 inches in width, and 5mm deep. A battery is provided, which is active once you remove the tab that prevents a circuit being made.
The only function is the shutter button, and once you figure out where the sensor at the end of the remote is aimed at (Near the inbuilt flash unit), you just press the button, and let the camera do it's own thing.
There are two downsides I can think of- one being it's size, and, although it seems durable, it could be a tad fragile. There is a pouch provided, but I think an inbuilt loop so you could attach it to a key-chain or lanyard might have been a good idea. Having said that, those are the only faults I can think of, and the remote is very good value for money
