Solid latch at a good price
I have just fitted this latch. It is of good quality. You will need to cut the bar to suit the depth of your gate. A hacksaw did the job for me. Perhaps fitting instructions would have been useful for inexperienced fitters like me. The hole size for the bar should be suggested as I wrongly selected a drill bit size by putting it up against the bar. Being square it would not turn and only then did I notice that when turning the bar needs more space. Something like 15mm was needed in the end to make sure it turned properly. A wood cutting bit may have been a better option as drills don't usually take much over about 12mm drill bits. Having made that error I had to use my 12mm drill bit in a circular motion to widen the hole. The screws were found to be adequate and pilot holes should be made to help with easy fitting. I did notice that there was quite a bit of play in the sockets the bar fits into. The tolerance could have been a bit better for a tighter fit. Overall, an excellent product for the price.

My experience
Delivered as shown. Main lock had a very thin coat of black paint and showing the early signs of rust. Put a new coat of pain on all door furniture before fixing.

Quality is a bit of a stretch.
Whilst it does the job it’s intended to, it is made from cheap cast ‘steel’ There were a couple of chips in the spigot from new that will no doubt reduce its lifespan. The screws that come with the product are far too short and of a very small diameter. There is a lot of slop in the retention arm that cannot be removed or reduced.

Ordered this item twice as liked look. Installed one on gate. Latch retainer failed.

As described
I only needed it for an internal door with light but regular use. It is perfect for the job. Looks the part, strong enough for my requirements. My only slight annoyance was that the back of both pieces that the latch rests on have small protrusions which meant they are not flat and when fitting you have to make extra holes to make it fit flat against the wall / door. But not much of an issue.

Top gate latch
Lots of these latches on the market, some thinner, some thicker, some with plain rings others with twisted. Some come with fixing screws, others don't. This latch has the all best features - well made and well painted in matt wrought iron black with thick twisted rings, a deep latch plate and blackened hex-head screws - and at a price to put some alternatives to shame. Can't fault it.
