Fun show, but poor picture quality
When I was a kid, I would snuggle up in my parents’ bed every Friday night to watch *Knight Rider* on their 13″ black-and-white TV. So when I noticed the NBC app had added the reruns to their “Summer Binge Watch” section, I started watching it with my own ten-year-old son, who likewise fell in love.
Fast-forward a few months: the summer is over and *Knight Rider* is no longer in the app, so I bought the Blu-ray set so we could continue watching. My son was ecstatic, but when we turned on the first episode, I immediately noticed the poor quality—not even as good as NBC’s streaming app, which was only about a 7/10 to begin with. I of course recognize that this is an old show, shot in 480×360, that we’re trying to view on a 55″ HDTV. I’m not expecting 1080p, much less 4K (which our TV doesn’t support, anyway). But the graininess of the digital transfer is ridiculous. We have DVDs that look better than this; the least they could have done is remaster it.
The show itself is very ’80s: hokey plots, bad dialog, etc.; and the show itself requires great suspension of disbelief. But all that would be fine if they had just made it look good. Five stars for bringing back a large part of my childhood, but three stars overall for the quality with which they did so.
