  • Perfect upgrade for the Lenovo ThinkPad T420, or any similar SandyBridge based i5 or similar socket 988/989 G1 Laptop!

Going from an i5 2540m 2c/4t to this i7 2760QM 4c/8t is the act of doubling one's performance. It only came at the cost of 10 extra watts, and the heat is dissipated just as easily as in stock config. Cinebench R15 multi threaded scores went from 247 to 505, no throttling issues, no cooling issues at all. That said, most of the time, even with it in performance mode... with the CPU anywhere from 3.1-3.7Ghz, it doesn't even need the fan at all, and can be cooled entirely passively and silently, wth temps never exceeding the 60's, but more so commonly living from 35-45/50c over all cores. This is of course in the Lenovo ThinkPad T420, as stated in the title. Short of going the Coreboot way, and shoving an IVB i7QM in here, this is the best that this machine can obtain. Short of an overpriced mobile extreme which tacks on yet another 10W, with no real additional performance gain. I would endorse buying these chips all day long, especially for the large following of T420 owners. This CPU scores a consistent 7300 +/- 10 or so points, in Passmark all day long while plugged in, and even with ALL energy savings possible in place, it still musters a strong 6800 or so. It can sip power as well, as I type this, the machine has yet to exceed 15W on full power full brightness... knock that down to a more balanced setting, and you'd be hard pressed to see it use over 6W. As such, stock batteries will still provide a strong 4-6 Hours, with the big boys (107WH or the like) giving you up to 10-15 Hr... On a 2011/12 machine... Can't go wrong!

  • T420 running like the terminator

Swapped out the 2520m. Expected some heat problems, also was worried about power difference (2520 was 35w, 2760 is 45w) but neither of those ended up being issues. The power issue was possibly helped by swapping ram with the lower voltage, and the heat was likely alleviated by swapping hdd with ssd, but even when running a movie off of the 2tb hdd in the ultrabay, temps don't rise much more than 5 degrees C. CPU hasn't ever had to throttle so far, even when running benchmark progs (highest temp reached was 90C after about one hour running CPU at 55-60%. Throttling doesn't occur til 100C from my understanding, but it hasn't gotten there yet. Overall, i am very satisfied with this CPU. I used arctic silver #5. The laptop i pit it in is a lenovo thinkpad t420 with the nvidea GPU, which i should mention did NOT end up being a heat problem. The t420 also has an evo850 256GB ssd, 2tb hdd in ultrabay caddy, 16GB of 1600MH 8-8-8-24 ram, usb 3.0 expresscard adapter, 1600x900 screen, 3G wwan card, and now the i7quad so this 5year old laptop should be relevant for atleast a couple more years. My next and probably final upgrade will be an AC wireless card. GO THONKPADS

  • Upgrade Dell Inspiron 15R N5110 with i7-2760QM

If you bought an Inspiron N5110 with the Core i5-2 (sandy bridge) processor family then you are likely experiencing slower performance with Windows 10 and modern apps. You can buy a new laptop to gain better performance than the Dell N5110 was shipped with or you can replace the processor with a better and greater core count processor. I replaced my i5-2430M with the i7-2760QM. Wow -- zero disappointment! The i7-2760QM is really affordable these days although there are a couple of considerations after the upgrade (must uninstall current video drivers and then re-install), I would look at the < $100 for the i7-2760QM as a viable upgrade path. Replace the original HDD with an SSD and you will be bragging on your equipment again to people who have newer laptops that are running slower.

  • Great upgrade for my old Dell N14 sandy bridge laptop

I had an old laptop and wanted to upgrade it to windows 10. It was pretty slow, so I upgraded the SSD and the processor to this 2760qm. I upgraded the PSU to the 90w model over the factory 60w model. After updating the bios of the motherboard this was a simple drop in replacement CPU. It has 2 times the capacity of the original i5 3mb cache. I would definitely recommend this to people looking for a cheap upgrade. Heat isn't too much of an issue if you have the i5 cooler already installed but i would definitely recommend a laptop cooler to keep things in check. Also download and install CPUz to monitor everything and lower the MAX cpu temp to 80c from the factory 100c.

  • Great way to inject some life into an old laptop

If you have an older laptop from this era (intel core 2nd gen), this will give you a nice jump in performance. Just watch out for heat issues, because your old i3/i5 heatsink might not be designed to cool a quad i7. I went from an i5 (2520m) to this i7 (2760qm) and immediately noticed a jump in speed and responsiveness. If you know how to replace a mobile cpu and your laptop supports this cpu, this upgrade is definitely worth it.

  • Quad core twice as fast over dual core

Great product, arrived in near-perfect condition. Gave new life to my 8 year old Dell Precision M6600 (upgraded from 2 cores to 4 cores). Can run video editing (Resolve and Vegas Pro), Rebelle watercolor apps smoothly after upgrade.

  • easy upgrade from 2 to 4 core in my Sony Laptop

It was an easy upgrade for my aging laptop giving me a few more years out of it. It more then doubled the CPU-Z benchmark speed from the old 2 core cpu.

  • Awesome upgrade to i3-2350

INTEL held out on each generation of processor. This 6 year old gen 2 chip is within 25% of performance of the top intel mobile chips (gen 8, like 8250u) Going from 2350m to 2760qm increased single thread performance 50% and overall performance 150%. (went from dual core to quad core). Some motherboards may not support the i7 but my fujitsu lifebook AH532's did. (i upgraded both to this processor and 256 ssd and now they FLY.

  • Great upgrade for old laptops

A litter sign of usages, but the performance is great! A great replacement of i5 2410m. One thing to notice is that my laptop only has 35W, but I think i7 2760qm requires 45W, so it is hard to get full performance but still better than i5.

  • Does exactly what it is supposed to do.

Used this to upgrade a W520 from a dual core i7 to this quad core 2760. All 4 channels of memory work as expected, it was a quick drop-in replacement. I used IC Diamond 7 thermal paste, and it runs like a champ on the original cooling with no noticeable throttling. Worth the upgrade.
