Perfect upgrade for the Lenovo ThinkPad T420, or any similar SandyBridge based i5 or similar socket 988/989 G1 Laptop!
Going from an i5 2540m 2c/4t to this i7 2760QM 4c/8t is the act of doubling one's performance. It only came at the cost of 10 extra watts, and the heat is dissipated just as easily as in stock config. Cinebench R15 multi threaded scores went from 247 to 505, no throttling issues, no cooling issues at all. That said, most of the time, even with it in performance mode... with the CPU anywhere from 3.1-3.7Ghz, it doesn't even need the fan at all, and can be cooled entirely passively and silently, wth temps never exceeding the 60's, but more so commonly living from 35-45/50c over all cores. This is of course in the Lenovo ThinkPad T420, as stated in the title. Short of going the Coreboot way, and shoving an IVB i7QM in here, this is the best that this machine can obtain. Short of an overpriced mobile extreme which tacks on yet another 10W, with no real additional performance gain. I would endorse buying these chips all day long, especially for the large following of T420 owners. This CPU scores a consistent 7300 +/- 10 or so points, in Passmark all day long while plugged in, and even with ALL energy savings possible in place, it still musters a strong 6800 or so. It can sip power as well, as I type this, the machine has yet to exceed 15W on full power full brightness... knock that down to a more balanced setting, and you'd be hard pressed to see it use over 6W. As such, stock batteries will still provide a strong 4-6 Hours, with the big boys (107WH or the like) giving you up to 10-15 Hr... On a 2011/12 machine... Can't go wrong!
