perfect set to try out Holbein!
perfect size and price to try out Holbein's unusual formula, and specialty pastel colors, before dropping $$$$ on the full set.
Holbein is known for their huge range pastel colors, and some oddly vaque descriptions of their pencil form factor. (not quite oil based, not truly wax based, and some proprietary spin, lol)
Uni colored pencils (the high end 100/240) are curiously vague about their formulation in the same way.
Coincidentally, they are both VERY very similar (if not identical) in the way they laydown, blend, and respond to surfaces:
Laydown is remarkably opaque, and smooth.
Blending is a whole different beast, and really is something you'll be pleased you can experiment with BEFORE you spend on the big set. I definitely am, and I'm still experimenting with them, bc I'm still not sure if I will buy a large set.
The unexpected ways these pencils interact with each other, and different surfaces can be quite counterintuitive, and honestly, I still get frustrated, as I have yet to get comfortable using them with consistent or regular results. this is probably just me .
buy these. try them. play! yay!
