AKG K812 Headphones. A premium choice for audiophiles seeking AKG's top-tier sound performance! Let's bring a little bit of Japan to you, wherever you are!
These sound totally different depending on how I amplify them, but in general, they are very even in frequency response and precise. In comparison, my old akg 702 sound flabby in the bass and hollow in the mids. Pairing these with my Alo studio six tube amp makes them very holographic and lush sounding, which is very different than the matter-of-fact like analytical sound they produce from the solid state amplifier in my chord mojo.
Regardless of source, I can hear very specific things like vocal microphone choice, eq, compression, etc. I can really easy to tell what is going on with bass as well (jazz bass vs p bass, amplification, etc.). However, I would highly recommend these with a good headphone amplifier as they are able to showcase the strengths of a good system.
I chose these over the hifi man Arya because I liked the accuracy / clarity, which allows me to hear what is actually coming through my front end. I found the Arya rolled off in the treble and boring at normal listening volume.
By the way, I find these to be very comfortable and the fit and finish is very luxurious. I was skeptical of the protein leather pads, but they are very well executed. Overall, great job AKG!
In my opinion the K812 is a very underrated headphone,
The reviews online by "professional" reviewers is mixed at best.
I have owned TOTL phones from the "Big 3" manufacturers (Beyer Dynamic, Sennheiser, and AKG).
In my opinion the K812 outperforms the HD800s, and the T1,
It is more "present" with more body and tonal richness than the Senn. or Beyer.
It images better then either, and although the soundstage may not be quite as wide as the HD800,
it is plenty wide while providing more depth of field. To me the Senn sounds too diffuse. While transparency is desirable, sound needs to have some substance to be realistic.
To me the K812 offers a terrific balance that provides a very musical listening experience. It is my favorite headphone out of the perhaps 15 or so I have owned
