Basic, technically dated DCC System
I bought this Lenz LZV100 system to have a workbench set-up for programming and testing locomotives. I does everything I need it to do. I will NOT use it to run my train layout, which is rather large. Even though Lenz is touted as "the inventor of DCC", technically this is an old and almost outdated system, not suitable to run a larger layout for the following reasons:. 1.) Lenz does not offer a radio or IR throttle, requiring constant un-plugging and re-plugging of the throttles. (There have been some crutches around, like Lenz Telephone adapter or the wearable radio pack, to mask the problem, but this shortcoming was never really remedied.) 2.) There is also no good way to control the turnouts (also referred to as track switches). 3.) There are also problems starting the LZV100, when more than 7 or 8 locomotives equipped with Lenz Gold Decoders and Lenz Power Pack 1 or 3 are on the track. In this case, the LZV will go on overload and immediately shut off. Bottom Line: It works like advertised, within it's technical limitations, but competitors do a better job. If you have a small layout and don't mind the lack of a radio throttle, then this is still a viable option, as long as the ebay price is low enough. In my case. due to the low price and the limited requirements I had, it was still an attractive purchase.
