Fantastic brass beauty!
Nope. It's not a Ludwig Black Beauty, but it has the elegant look and unmistakable sound! I came very close to spending $700 on the original BB, but I figured I would split that money into 2 new snare purchases. I ordered the Big Black by Pork Pie and the Ludwig Supralite (also sized 6.5x14). The Ludwig hasn't arrived yet, but I am already happy with my decision. This snare sings when tuned medium to high. When tuned low it has that distinctive "pop" that most snare drums struggle to achieve. No nasty over tones. Easily tuned. I am impressed. With the nice comments out of the way, I have to say I was a little disappointed in the tuning rod to lug nut action. Quite honestly the quality could be better in that regard. I am hoping that issue will take care of itself once I work them in a bit. There could be some particulates in the threads. One other thing to mention...The black beauty has a seamless beaded shell. The shell on the Big Black has an obvious weld seam when viewed from the inside. This does not effect the outer aesthetics at all. It is finely crafted on the outside, and the seam does not effect the tone as far as I can tell. Those minor flaws are really not an issue when I count the money that I saved. If you had any reservations about this drum, just go for it. You will be happy that you did.
