Upon discovering that a psychotic serial killer has been using his writings as inspiration, legendary author Edgar Allan Poe (John Cusack) joins forces with a bright, young Baltimore detective to catch the maniac and end his reign of terror. Detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans) was investigating a vicious murder when he realized the crime scene bore a striking resemblance to a mystery story that was just published in the local newspaper. The author of that ominous tale was Edgar Allan Poe, a brilliant young writer whose status as a social outcast catches the attention of the diligent detective. Shortly after Poe is questioned by the authorities, detectives stumble upon yet another murder scene that seems to have been inspired by the author's morbid writings. Convinced that the killer will once again use Poe's writings as a springboard to murder, Detective Fields recruits the reclusive author to help piece together a pattern to the crimes and stop the madman before he can strike again. I Adore ANYTHING John Cusack Is In!
I have "ConAir"; "Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil"; just to name a FEW of the John Cusak movies I own. And now, "The Raven". Its not my favorite John Cusack movie-that would be "Midnight In..."-but it IS an amazing demonstration of the breadth of J.C.'s talent as an actor. Edgar Allan Poe would be tough character for OLIVIER to portray, but Cusack delivers the tortured, emotionally lost Genius as an Everyman...an Everyman who just so happens to be able to tap into the Darkness that exists in ALL of us. Intensely Fun
Despite a few gory parts, this was an enjoyable and modern twist on Poe's life and writings. My mother wouldn't enjoy it but for those of us who dare to admit that we are Poe fans, it's an entertaining flick. Product did not arrive, however this is not a big deal. I have made hundreds of purchases. And have been happy with everyone. YOU GO POE!
I am a big fan of the Master of the Macabre, Edgar Allan Poe. I read a lot of his short stories, like The Tell Tale Heart, The Monkey's Paw, The Cask of Amontillado, and many more of Poe's writings from the Nineteenth Century. The Raven is an interesting perspective on Edgar Allan Poe brought to modern day film making. Wonderfully portrayed by famed film actor, John Cusack. The Raven, is set in 1849 Baltimore. During Poe's lifetime. I, being a History Major in College, and a Civil War Reenactor, I was quite taken by The Raven's attention to historical details. M. Dupin = Edgar Allan Poe?
John Cusack's portrayal of Edgar Allan Poe placed in the situation of pursuing a serial killer using his writings as the basis for crimes is engaging. Cusack's Poe is seen as an addictive personality balanced by his work as an author, journalist, poet.
